Abingdon Community Larder

The Abingdon Community Larder is open every Friday at the Conduit Centre, Trinity Church, Conduit Road, Abingdon, OX14 1DB.

It is a Food Membership Scheme. From £3.50 a week members can choose from 10 food items in boxes and tins and jars, and as much fruit and vegetables as they want.

It is not means tested – open to all, and aims to help some people who are finding food too expensive.

The food – that would otherwise go to waste because of reasons such as over supply, comes from supermarkets like Tesco and Asda

The larder is  part of the charity SOFEA. They not only help stop food waste, but also provide training for young people who did not get the best out of education and need practical skills before getting into employment.

Help Us Help You – Mental Health NHS campaign

We are delighted to announce that the NHS is launching its first national campaign on mental health services on 17 November 2020. There has never been a more important time to look after the mental health of the nation – and we want to remind everyone that the NHS is here for mental health, even during the pandemic.

Help Us Help You – Mental Health is a two-month campaign aiming at increasing awareness of NHS talking therapies services (IAPT). It will encourage adults with mental health issues to seek help and consider accessing NHS talking therapy via their GP or through self-referral.

Fishing Permits

It is essential for all anglers to carry a permit to fish the town waters.  This is a legal requirement and so is a rod licence.

To get a fishing permit please call in to the Information Centre which is at the Roysse Court Offices on Bridge Street.

Normal opening hours are 10.00 am and 3.00 pm Monday to Saturday, but please call ahead before making the journey.  The number is 01235 522642.

You must have an Environment Agency rod licence to cover any days you want to fish. For more information on rod licences, please click here.

Music In the Park – Terms and Conditions

With less than a week to go until this years Music in the Park event the countdown is on! And rumour has it even the warm weather has got its ticket!

So make sure you get yours as soon as possible so you don’t miss out!

Please also see the terms and conditions here which include no glass bottles or BBQs.

This year promises to be as good as ever with music from Local bands; Nevada, Fallen Angels, The Voodoo Penguins and Hope & Glory.

Concluding with the usual Proms Concert by Abingdon Town Band and a Grand Firework Display.

Throughout the evening there will be local Food Vans and Bars serving a range of food and drink for you to enjoy.

This year’s Music in the Park takes place in the evening of Saturday 1st June at 4:30pm, following on from the popular daytime event, Fun in the Park.

Wristbands for this year’s event cost £10 for adults and £5 for children. Under 5’s are free but will need a band for entry. No concessions.

Grass Car in the Market Place

Still time to shop in Abingdon for Mother’s Day

Today has been a buzzing day in the town centre with the Clubs and Societies Day in the Guildhall and the Local Excellence Market basking in the sunshine out on the Market Place.

java offer image.jpgTown centre favourites, Patisserie Pascal, showed how to barnstorm a retailing opportunity, taking part in the Local Excellence Market and selling out of many of their lines by mid-morning. The grass-covered car on the Easygrass stand was a wonderful bit of strangeness but was soon out-shone by the deadly, silent Ninjas stalking the streets. (They turned out to be from 21st Century Martial Arts based at Larkmead School.)

You may have missed the fun today but some town centre shops are open tomorrow (Sunday) in case you are in need of an urgent Mother’s Day present – try Added Ingredients in Stert Street for chocolates, wine, hampers and cooking gadgets. They are open 10-4pm Sundays. Fabulous Flowers on Bridge Street is open 9-2 for wonderful bouquets and arrangements.

landingpage_debbie's stall 3.jpgYou could get round to Patisserie Pascal on Sunday morning to grab something to make Mum’s breakfast special or bring Mum in to town for free cake at the Java Coffee Shop on the Market Place. 

For a bigger treat, the Crown and Thistle on Bridge Street is aiming to make sure that anyone who walks in for lunch tomorrow will get served despite it being one of the busiest days of the year – they don’t want to let any desperate Dads, Sons and Daughters down! 

 

So don’t despair for Mother’s Day – just head into Abingdon-on-Thames and make Mum’s day just perfect.
