New Outdoor Gym Equipment at Boxhill Park and Chaunterell Way
/in News /by Nichola CayleyThe Town Council is pleased to announce that new outdoor gym equipment is now ready for use at Chauntrell Way (by the river walk) and Boxhill Park. This will be a welcome addition to those wanting to improve their fitness this year. Each piece of equipment has instructions for use. We would ask that children do not try to use or play on this equipment as it can be dangerous if not used correctly and is not good for young bodies! If little ones want to burn of some energy too, please pop down to the newly extended play area at Chaunterell Way – it is proving very popular since its installation at the end of last year!

Update on the Abbey Hall
/in News /by Lizzie MartinAbingdon Town Council confirms that the RAAC mitigation works to the roof of Abbey Hall will start in the second week of February 2025. Decoration and making good of the auditorium will follow.
The council supports a continued cinema presence in Abingdon. It has therefore extended the rent-free use of the Old Magistrate’s Court for Abbey Cinema until 31st March 2025 while these works take place. It is hoped that the Abbey Cinema will then be back in the auditorium and that their normal service will be resumed.
Update on the Abbey Hall – 23 December 2024
/in News /by Nichola CayleySince the discovery of RAAC (Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete) roofing panels in Abbey
Hall two months ago, officers, with the support of councillors, have been working intensively to
seek to resolve both the problem, and the best future for Abbey Hall.
Abingdon Town Council is pleased to confirm that the asbestos contamination issue at Abbey Hall
has been professionally addressed. The underside of the roof has been sealed to prevent further
contamination.
The next step is to decide the long-term future of Abbey Hall, which requires extensive work,
including the installation of a remediation scheme for the RAAC roofing panels, roof repairs, energy
efficiency measures and reconfiguration. The cost of the measures so far has been £180,000 and
the Council has been advised that the cost of a full renovation of Abbey Hall would be £2,500,000,
which is beyond the Council’s financial resources.
In the circumstances, the Council has sought technical, financial, and legal advice to ensure its
actions remain prudent, offer best value for Abingdon residents, and comply with regulatory
requirements. In addition, the Council has to assess the effect that any building and renovation
work will have on the historic Guildhall, to which Abbey Hall is adjoined. The Council is also liaising
with Vale of White Horse District Council, which has certain rights under the agreement which
transferred the ownership of Abbey Hall to the Council.
A Special Council Meeting was scheduled for 18th December to discuss this advice, but it was
deferred as not all the necessary information had been provided. The Council will reconvene after
obtaining all the required advice.
The Council is very supportive of providing a continuing cinema presence in Abingdon. To this end,
the Council has extended the rent-free use of the Old Magistrate’s Court for Abbey Cinema until
28th February 2025
No town council meeting today (Thursday 19 December 2024)
/in News /by Lizzie MartinThere is no meeting of the town council scheduled to take place this evening. The next planned meeting of the town council is on 15 January 2025 when the budget for 2025-26 will be agreed.
The town council continues to work on future plans for the Abbey Hall following the discovery of structural issues which needed to be addressed urgently and which required the closure of the building for safety reasons. Once the essential remedial work has been completed in the new year, the council will meet to consider its long-term future.
