Abingdon-on-Thames is a vibrant market town with a population of over 33,000. Abingdon-on-Thames Town Council is a parish council under the Local Government Act 1972 and is the successor authority in terms of parish functions to the Abingdon Borough Council. The Town Council is responsible to the residents of Abingdon-on-Thames for a wide range of services. In this section of the Abingdon-on-Thames website we outline these services, as well as information about council meetings, committees, councillors, budget spending and the civic calendar.
The Council’s Vision is “to develop an inclusive community so that Abingdon is the place where everyone wants to live and where the wellbeing of residents is prioritised. In developing this community, the town will be one which is environmentally sustainable, vibrant, resilient and safe.” This is core to delivering and developing our services. The Council has adopted four key strategic objectives in order to acheive this Vision:
1 To respond effectively and speedily to the climate emergency.
2 To develop a resilient, sustainable town which will provide a home for residents now and in the future.
3 To manage the Council’s assets efficiently and effectively to meet for the needs of the community now and in the future.
4 To work with community partners to support those who are vulnerable and in need and to create opportunities to increase social inclusivity.

The people of Abingdon-on-Thames took advantage of the sunny weather, and turned out in force to the town’s annual family day. Held in the Abbey Grounds, on the site of Abingdon’s historic abbey, several thousand people enjoyed the mixture of stalls, entertainment and children’s activities laid on by the Town Council. As always, the many thriving clubs and societies in the town were well represented with stalls ranging from the swimming club, to the green gym, to the town twinning society, to name a few. Our military community stationed at Dalton Barracks were also well represented and the junior assault course they were hosting was particularly popular. Taking advice from our visitor economy specialists, and responding to calls from residents and community groups, Abingdon-on-Thames Town Council has been leading a major new project to give the town one website which can encompass much of the activity going on in the town. The new super-site will combine the websites that were previously run separately by the Town Council, the Choose Abingdon Partnership, the Guildhall, the County Hall Museum and Abingdon Business Alliance. In addition the site will have a network of in-depth articles about the history of the buildings and streets of the town that will grow as more and more items are added by the historical researchers of the Abingdon Area Archaelology and History Society.
The town diary will be easy to find on this site with one calendar into which the Guildhall, Market Place and all other events can be input. To find out how to put your event on the calendar, just click here.
